The Sky Blue Corner: This team is something special

JOSÉ LORES

I don’t know what to say other than what a performance! If there is a team in world football who play better football than Celta have this season I want to see them. Goals from Nolito (25), Iago Aspas (29, 56) and John Guidetti (82) provided us with a result that none of us will forget any time soon to put us joint top of the league table.

First of all, I would like to say thank you to Paco Herrera. Thank you for building the foundations of the cantera and achieving promotion, you have my eternal gratitude. Thank you to Abel Resino, thank you for keeping us in the division when all seemed lost, this would not be possible without you. Thank you to Luis Enrique, thank you for giving this team the confidence that they can beat anyone with good football, you deserve all of your successes. And finally thank you to Toto Berizzo, thank you for building a team that every Celtista around the world can be proud of and for sticking to your principals no matter what, you have made our humble club the envy of the footballing world.

There is not one player who doesn’t deserve 10 out of 10. Sergio Alvarez showed his worth with some fantastic saves to deny Barcelona on numerous occasions. The defence of Hugo, Cabral, Sergi and Jonny was nothing short of perfect. Messi, Suarez and Neymar hardly had a kick all game, a trio that even the best teams in Europe have been unable to stop. The midfield was excellent once again. Without doubt Augusto has been the best midfielder in the league this season with Daniel Wass arguably being the best new signing in La Liga up to now. Radoja came into the side and played with the experience and the knowhow of a full international rather than a 22 year old. Finally our attack, madre mía. The fact that a player with Nolito’s quality is still here, still performing week after week is nothing short of a small miracle. Fabian Orellana gave Mathieu endless problems whilst working tirelessly throughout; his progression over the last 18 months has been quite spectacular. Seeing Iago Aspas scoring in the sky blue shirt again fills me with joy, what a performance from the genius of Moaña.

I for one am incredibly pleased that we took the game to Barcelona. We pressed high with intensity, played our possession game and showed no fear to the European Champions. We showed the world how football should be played and for that I am proud.  As for our targets this season, it is only natural that they have risen given our fantastic start to the season. I think it is a little too early on in the season to be thinking about the Champions League but judging from our last two performances and the recent results of Valencia and Sevilla I think that we are right to be optimistic. The Europa League is definitely within our reach with the team we have and I am confident that this will be a very successful season indeed.

This Saturday we face an Eibar side that have played above expectation so far this season. It is a game that we should be looking to win without underestimating the ability of the opposition. It will be interesting to see whether Toto sees it necessary to make some changes in what will be our third game within seven days or stick with the same side but either way, we will go into the game with a lot of confidence in ourselves and it is important that we use this to our advantage to continue our great start to the season.

Best regards and come on Celta!

¡Saludos y Hala Celta!

¡Saudos e Ala Celta!
